Coming of age story “Beat Girl” to hit UK cinemas
From a novel to a YouTube series, the coming of age story “Beat Girl” takes on the silver screen.
The new independent British feature Beat Girl produced by beActive, will be released into UK cinema on 10th May 2013. It is the first independent film to be launched across a multi-media platform, with a book, game, web series and the movie. Beat Girl stars Louise Dylan as Heather Jennings (BBC’s Jane Austin’s Emma), Craig Daniel Adams as Toby (Hollyoaks) and Percelle Ascott as Mike (Mandem On The Wall and Wizards Vs Aliens).
Beat Girl, is a coming of age story of a young girl as she is torn between her late mother’s dreams of her getting a place in the prestigious Julliard performing arts School in New York and becoming a world class pianist and the pulsating world of EDM (Electronic Dance Music).
For Heather music is everything. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Heather has always dreamed about getting into Julliard and becoming a classical pianist. But all her dreams get shattered the day her mum dies, and her life suddenly falls into silence. Although she attempts to pursue the course she and her mother had always known, she gets carried away by the enticing underground world of DJ-ing, and her heart starts to beat again to the rhythm of a new life – and a new love, Toby.
Eventually she finds herself torn between two worlds of music. With her Julliard audition fast approaching, Heather is forced to chose between what she has always known and this new world of excitement she so desires.
“Beat Girl” follows Heather’s journey through music. The crossroads she finds herself at, the paths she chooses and the discoveries these new paths lead to.
This vibrant film is rated PG, produced by beActive, created by Emmy-nominated writer-producer Nuno Bernardo and directed by the award winning director Maírtin de Barra.
The Beat Girl game is available to download via iPhone and Android, the book is available on Amazon and the webseries on YouTube. You can also purchase the soundtrack on iTunes or stream it via Spotify.
The films cinema release date for the UK and Ireland is May 10, Portugal is May 9 and video on demand available on Virgin, 4oD, iTunes, Talk Talk, EE and FilmFlex May 10. The film will be made available in the US on Hulu May 29.
