E2E feature writer Aaron Nelson rounds up the X Factor’s 2013 finale.

X Factor Final Two 2012

On Saturday night we waved a fond farewell to Luke Friend. Last night we discovered who out of Sam Bailey and Nicolas McDonald was crowned the winner of The X Factor 2013!

The momentous conclusion of this year’s series began last night with a family reunion which saw all 12 finalist re-unite on stage with a fully-charged (if somewhat mime-y) performance of Katy Perry’s ‘Roar’. In the close of the song, our final two walked out on stage and joined in on the final song.

Up next, the stage was over taken by a certain boy band that caused quite a stir amongst the female variety within the audience – One Direction (well it wasn’t going to be Five, now, was it?) showed us how they had broken out of the baby gate and performed their new single ‘Midnight Memories’, a far more rock-ier tone to what we’re used to.

It was then time for our final two to perform their own favourite songs from the seires; Nicolas McDonald was up first with Sarah McLachlan’s ‘Angels’ which he first performed in week 3. It was then Sam Bailey’s turn, and she took on one of her most acclaimed performances from the series, Jennifer Rush’s ‘The Power of Love’, which she first sang way back in the first week.

The show then took a rather alarming Lion King/Tweety Bird turn when Katy Perry performed her new single ‘Unconditionally’, which saw the pop-star lowered from a gilt cage and sing surrounded by puppet-birds – non of this hid the fact, however, that Perry’s vocals during the performance were somewhat CUCKOO (Because cuckoos are birds? Sorry…).

This year on The X Factor, each of the two final contestants have different winner’s singles. Nicolas McDonald took to the stage following Perry’s performance to sing for us his choice: ‘Superman (It’s Not Easy)’ by Five for Fighting (no, I’ve never heard of it either). Sam Bailey’s choice was the more well-known ‘Skyscraper’, made famous by Demi Lovato, which earned Sam an earth-quaking applause from Wembley Arena.

The next time Nicolas McDonald or Sam Bailey will perform, it will be as winners of this year’s X Factor.

But before that, Elton John (in the industry icon’s first appearance on the show) and Gary Barlow (in the singer’s last ever performance as a judge, what with this being Gazza’s last year on the panel), climbed a rotating podium to play duelling pianos and sing the pair’s new release ‘Face to Face’, which was complete with marcher’s drums and white flags everywhere!

It was then down to Dermot O’Leary to reveal who will be getting the record deal! The money! The chance to tour with Beyoncé!

Sam Bailey Wins 2013

The winner of The X Factor 2013 is…

Tears and confetti terrorise the stage!

Commiserations to Nicolas McDonald, who joined the other 11 finalists as they gathered around a jubilant Sam Bailey as she belted out her new single ‘Skyscraper’ as the winner – with votes for the prison-warden totalling up to over A MILLION from the public.

Phew! This year’s series is over. But what changes will be made to our favourite talent show when it returns to our screen next year? Wait and see!
