Spread the Word is delighted to be leading on the appointment of the first ever Young Poet Laureate for London. This will be a life-changing opportunity for at least one talented young poet, with commissions worth £9000 as well as superb development opportunities offered by Spread the Word.

Through an open application process, six talented young poets (aged 18 -25) will take part in a development week (including 3 nights/4 days outside London) over the summer of 2013, culminating with an opportunity to perform at Southbank and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. On National Poetry Day (October 3rd 2013) one of the six will be announced as the first Young Poet Laureate for London.

SPOKE is a new visionary poetry and spoken word programme that will offer people in East London an opportunity to watch, perform and develop careers in spoken word and performance poetry in and around the newly evolved Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the former site of the Olympic Park over the next eighteen months.

Commissioned by the London Legacy development Corporation, SPOKE is being developed by A New Direction, together with Spread the Word and Apples and Snakes as leading partners.

Who can apply?

Applications are invited from young people aged between 18–25. You must be in this age range on 24th June 2013 and you must live in a London Borough. This means you must have a London postcode for your home address (if you’re not sure, websites such as Doogal provide a map). We are looking for talented young poets. You do not have to be a published poet, but you will need to demonstrate a commitment to the artform and be prepared to include performance as part of your work.

How do I apply?

Please follow these instructions carefully, and send the following details:

1. Samples of work: minimum of 3 and maximum of 5 poems – no more than 120 lines in total.
2. CV: a Writer’s CV (if you have one) and an’ordinary’ CV detailing education, employment/voluntary development, your contact details and your date of birth.
3. Personal Statement: please tell us in no more than 400 words what you hope to bring to the Young Poet Laureate scheme and what you hope to gain from it.
4. Write a poem: up to 30 lines, inspired by East London, The Olympics or the Olympic Legacy.
5. Confirm: that you are available for the development week of July 22nd 2013.
